LCR Meters measuring internal impedance of batteries, warning!
2026-06-01
LCR Meters such as the 878B, 879B, 880, 885, 886, or our benchtop models 891, 894, or 895 are not equipped to isolate the load or device under test. Therefore, it could be damaging for the LCR meter to "measure" the internal impedance of a battery. A LCR Meter should only be used to measure "de-energized" components or the LCR inputs will be damaged.
If the intention of the user is to measure the internal resistance, impedance or some other parameters of a battery, a battery analyzer such as the BA6010 or BA6011 should be used. The Battery Analyzer can measure a lot of the parameters that an LCR Meter can, however, it uses an AC signal of a fixed frequency of 1 kHZ. The BA6011 can measured a battery of up to 300 Volts.
